Norman, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels gave the NCAA D-I No. 26-ranked University of Oklahoma Sooners everything they could handle through five innings, but the Sooners broke out in the sixth and went on to an 11-0 win in non-conference action Monday evening (Apr. 30) at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Okla.
MACU starter
Colby Crawford sit down the first six Sooner hitters he faced before giving up a run on a wild pitch in the third inning for the game's first tally.
The Evangels best chance to score came in the fourth when
Joe Moore and
Luis Martinez led off with singles that put runners on the corners with no one out. But Jake Fisher came on in relief of OU starter Cale Coshow and retired the next three hitters, including a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning unscathed.
After Erik Ross hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the fifth, the Sooners (29-16) broke the game open with six runs in the sixth, with the biggest blow being a three-run homer by Dillon Yeaman.
Martinez and Moore each had solid outings at the plate for the Evangels (9-39), combining to go 5-of-8 and accounting for five of the Evangels six hits on the night.
Andrew Smith was 1-of-3 for MACU.
Crawford lasted three innings, giving up only one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
Fisher got the win by pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings and striking out seven.
In addition to Yeaman's three RBI, Max White also drove in three for the Sooners on a 2-of-4 effort at the plate.
The Evangels will next compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Regional tournament next week in Lakewood, Colo. on the campus of Colorado Christian University.
