USAO's bats come alive in sweep of Evangels

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers scored a combined 24 runs in sweeping the Mid-America Christian University Evangels Saturday afternoon (Apr. 7) at James Curtis Field.  The Drovers won the opener 10-4 and then the second game 14-3.

The first game was a pitcher's duel between MACU hurler Colby Crawford and the Drovers' Seth Sturgeon through five innings, with an RBI single by the Drovers' Blake Taylor in the second accounting for the game's only run to that point.

Crawford kept it a one-run game by wiggling out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fifth by inducing a fly out to Newt Compton.

MACU then had an opportunity to take the lead with runners on second and third and only one out in the bottom of the inning, but the Evangels failed to get a bunt down on a squeeze play that led to Justin Rivera being tagged out at home.

USAO then took advantage with a six-run sixth inning on only three hits.  The inning featured two costly errors by the Evangels and a two-run single by Compton.

After the Evangels (5-29, 2-19 SAC) got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Daniels and a bases loaded walk to Joe Moore, the Drovers put the game away with three more runs in the seventh.

Kevin Parsons finished the scoring with a two-run double that plated Kory Palmer and Jon Jon Lemos in the bottom of the seventh for the Evangels.

Crawford was charged with seven runs, but only three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Sturgeon also lasted 5 2/3 innings for the Drovers and gave up two runs in the win.

Brandon Jewett was 1-of-3 with three RBI in the opener for the Drovers (22-16, 13-10 SAC).

The nightcap started promising for the Evangels, as Shane Brinker led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer.  The Evangels then another run in the inning as Austin Hilterbran singled and eventually scored on a balk that made it 2-0.

But it was all downhill from there as the Drovers scored two in the second to tie it and then busted things wide open with seven runs in the third.  The big inning was powered by a two-run double by Brian Vigo and a two-run single from Compton that made it 9-2.

It was 11-2 when solo blasts from Jewett and Chance Hill fueled a three-run fifth inning.

Hilterbran singled home Shane Brinker in the bottom of the fifth for the Evangels' third run.  Hilterbran was 2-of-4 with a run scored for the Evangels in the second game.

Jewett and Heath Wilda each had three hits in the nightcap to lead the Drovers' offensive attack.

Simon Mitchell worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up the win for USAO.

The Evangels will next host Oklahoma Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 10) at 3 p.m.
