OKLAHOMA CITY -- Mid-America Christian University senior guard Charlie Shorter has been named the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 1-7, the league announced today (Jan. 7).
Shorter powered the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a pair of victories this past week, averaging 28.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.0 steals while shooting 51 percent overall from the field.
The 6-1 Dallas, Texas native started the week by dropping 30 points in an 89-76 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan University, then propelled the Evangels to a 93-84 victory at No. 9-ranked Rogers State University with a game-high 26 points along with four rebounds and two steals on 11-of-18 shooting from the floor. He took the game over down the stretch of the second half in the win at RSU, scoring eight of the Evangels' 10 points during a 10-0 spurt that turned a 71-69 deficit into an eight-point lead that MACU never relinquished.
He currently ranks second in the SAC in scoring (21.9 ppg) and is fifth in steals (2.1 spg) and eighth in field-goal percentage (.402). Shorter is also second on Evangels with 21 steals and has recorded 3.5 rebounds a game.
Shorter and the Evangels (6-4, 1-0 SAC) are next scheduled to play an exhibition game at Rhema Bible College tomorrow evening (Jan. 8) at 7:30 p.m. in Broken Arrow, Okla. before resuming conference action at Wayland Baptist University on Thursday night (Jan. 10) at 8 p.m. in Plainview, Texas.
