The Dish on the Evangels: This is the official season opener for the Evangels, but they have played a pair of competitive exhibition outings against NCAA D-II squads. MACU started by playing No. 12-ranked Midwestern State University tight last Wednesday (Oct. 30) in Wichita Falls, Texas before falling 85-79. In such a close game, the Evangels were hurt by only shooting 56.8 percent (21-of-37) from the free-throw line. MACU then routed the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs 91-73 on Saturday night (Nov. 2) inside the Gaulke Activity Center. Angelo Lewis led four Evangels in double-figures with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Lewis averaged 17.5 ppg along with 7.5 rpg in the two exhibition games. Junior point guard Semar Farris scored 15.5 ppg and recorded five assists per game. Reggie Davis also averaged double-figure scoring at 15 ppg, including 19 points in the victory over SWOSU.
The Dish on the Warriors: The Bacone College Warriors opened the 2013-14 season on the road against new Sooner Athletic Conference member Southwestern Christian University on Saturday (Nov. 2). The Warriors were nicked 94-89 by the Eagles despite a game-high 26 points from Derrick Thomas. Creed Flowers also scored 21 as the Warriors placed four players in double-digit scoring.
High Expectations: A big season is expected out of senior forward Angelo Lewis, who returns as the reigning Sooner Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and was also a first-team All-SAC performer last season.
Did you know? The Evangels are 5-1 in season openers since joining the NAIA in 2007, with the lone setback coming in the 2008-09 campaign against Central Baptist.
