Evangels Explode Offensively in 111-73 Rout of Bacone

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jarius Wilson pumped in a career-high 25 points to lead the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a season-opening 111-73 victory over the Bacone College Warriors Tuesday night (Nov. 5) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.  The 111 points are the second most points the Evangels have scored since joining the NAIA,  bested only by a 119 point tally in a win over Southwestern Christian University last season (12/12/11).

The Evangels took charge early as Wilson and Angelo Lewis combined for 13 points to fuel an 18-0 spurt after the Warriors scored the first five points of the game.

It was a 10-point lead when Lewis nailed a three to cap 9-1 spurt that ballooned the lead to 42-24 at the 5:43 mark of the opening half.

The lead grew as high as 26 in the first half before the Evangels settled for a 62-39 lead at the break.

The Evangels (1-0) continued the onslaught at the outset of the second half on five points by Wilson and then a bucket by Josh Smith expanded the edge to 31 at 70-39.

Derrick Thomas and Creed Flowers tried to help make things interesting for the Warriors (0-2) by teaming up for 13 points of a 14-2 outburst that trimmed the lead to 81-63 with 10:02 remaining.

But the Evangels quickly got back in gear as MACU received points from six different players during an 18-2 surge that put it away with 5:38 remaining.

Wilson's career-best 25 points came on 7-of-13 overall from the field, 4-of-6 from three-point distance and 7-of-9 at the free-throw line.  Lewis scored and 19 and Smith also had a career night of 14 points along with a team-high six rebounds.

Semar Farris added 15 and a team-high eight assists, with Stephen Armstrong chipping in with 11 points and Luke Mergerson also reaching double-figures with 10.

Wilson, Farris and Josh Minner also recorded three steals as the Evangels forced 33 turnovers on the night.

Thomas led the Warriors with 15 points and Flowers scored 14.

The Evangels shot 56.2 percent (41-of-73) from the field as a team, while limiting the Warriors to only a 36.7 percent (22-of-60) shooting clip. After struggling from the charity stripe in their two exhibition outings, the Evangels were much better tonight, going 20-of-27 (74.1%) at the foul line.

MACU will remain at home and host College of the Ozarks on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) at 2 p.m.
