OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the second straight day, a plethora of errors came back to haunt the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in a 13-7 setback to the Evangel University Crusaders Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) at James Curtis Field. The scheduled doubleheader became a single game due to poor field conditions earlier in the day.
The Evangels (0-8) trailed by four runs twice at 6-2 and 8-4, but rallied back with a chance to tie in the bottom of the seventh.
Following an RBI groundout by Dustin Carlsward in the sixth that made it 8-5, the Evangels came back with two runs in the seventh to come within a run.
After Z Tipton drew a one-out walk and scored on an error to make it a two-run game, Jake Magness singled home Christian Hill but Kory Palmer was throw out trying to tie the score from second on a strong throw from Jacob Childers that ended the inning.
The Crusaders (7-1) then pulled away as CJ Garza and Darin Francis each hit RBI singles in a two-run eighth and a three-run ninth to jump ahead by the final six-run margin.
Miscues again hurt the Evangels and forced them to play from behind, as six of the Crusaders' first eight runs were unearned.
Hill went 3-of-5 at the plate for the Evangels with two RBI, while Carlsward and Magness also drove in two runs.
The Crusaders got three hits and three RBI each from Francis and Michael Headlee to pace their attack.
MACU will stay at home and host Bacone College for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 19) starting at noon.
