What's at stake: The Evangels would secure at least a share of the third spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a victory. A win coupled with losses by Rogers State and USAO would give the Evangels sole possession of third place.
The Dish on the Evangels: Senior guard Charlie Shorter saved his best for last with a career-high 42 points on Senior Night, but it wasn't enough as the No. 3-ranked and regular season SAC champion John Brown University hung on for an 89-80 win Thursday night (Feb. 21).
Shorter became just the fifth player in MACU history to reach 2,000 career points with a 30-point performance last Saturday (Feb. 16) at USAO. He is tops in the SAC this year in scoring (22.0 ppg), while Angelo Lewis ranks second on the team in scoring at 14.9 ppg and is first in the conference with 8.2 rebounds a game. Valencia has dished out a team-high 98 assists on the season.
The Dish on the Cavaliers: The St. Gregory's University Cavaliers are mired in a 17-game losing skid and are 6-19 overall and winless at 0-15 in the SAC.
Fayzon Richey is second in the SAC in scoring with 20.3 ppg and is also the Cavaliers' leading rebounder with 6.4 rpg while ranking second on the team with 52 assists. Devonte Young leads the Cavaliers with 64 dimes on the season.
The Coaches:
Willie Holley is in his 40th season as head coach at Mid-America Christian University and his 763 career victories rank first in school history and second all-time in the NAIA. He guided the Evangels to their first-ever NAIA Top 25 ranking this season, climbing as high as No. 23.
Holley has helped the Evangels become competitive in a short period of time in the SAC, as for the second straight year, Holley kept the Evangels in the hunt for a Sooner Athletic Conference postseason tournament berth until the final day of the season. MACU more than doubled its win total over its first two seasons with 13 conference victories in the 2009-10 season and achieved a landmark victory at defending NAIA National Champion Oklahoma Baptist during the 2010-11 season.
John Martin is in his fifth season at the helm of the St. Gregory's University Cavaliers. Before coming to SGU, Martin was the head coach of Moore HS for three years and at John Marshall HS in OKC for two seasons. Martin guided John Marshall to a state championship in 2003.
