Plainview, Texas -- Josh Chinni drove in five runs to lead the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers to a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels Friday afternoon (Mar. 22) in Plainview, Texas.
The Evangels' seventh-inning rally in the opener fell just short, as Logan Evans came out of the bullpen for the Pioneers with two out and the tying run at the plate and induced a groundout by Jerry McNew to end the game.
Down 6-0, MACU took advantage of three errors by the Pioneers in the seventh to stage a four-run inning. Bryan McKissick drove in a run and Christian Hill also had an RBI groundout in the inning.
Josh Chinni helped the Pioneers to a six-run lead with a solo homer in the third and a two-run double in a three-run fourth inning.
Tom Bailey allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings, but none earned thanks to the three miscures in the seventh.
Tim Ulloa held the Pioneers hitless over the final 2 2/3 innings for the Evangels, while J.P. Seifried and Trent Daniels each had two hits for the Evangels
The Evangels got in an early 3-0 hole in the nightcap before Taylor Daniels hit an RBI single and Seifried drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in a three-run fourth inning that knotted things up.
Chinni put the Pioneers back in front with an RBI single and a run-scoring double by Brian Allen made it 5-3 after four.
After the Evangels came within a run in the fifth, the Pioneers scored two more in the bottom of the fifth and then tacked on four more in the sixth to put it away.
Taylor Daniels went 2-of-3 with an RBI for the Evangels and Hill also had two hits.
Chinni drove in two more to lead the Pioneers, while Bernie Rosario and Johnny Hendrixson each collected four hits.
MACU and WBU will wrap up the four-game series with another doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 23).
