OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 16-ranked Lubbock Christian University Chaps won by scores of 16-6 and 7-1 to complete a four-game sweep of the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the Sooner Athletic Conference opening series for both schools Friday afternoon (Mar. 8) at James Curtis Field.
Levi Nelson kept the Evangels close in the nightcap, allowing four runs with three earned and striking out six in his 5 1/3 innings of work.
An RBI single by Dalton Silva put the Chaps in front 1-0 in the second and consecutive doubles from Kevin Domrzalski and Brennyn Smith in the third plated another run. Jason Fisch then singled home Smith for a 3-0 lead.
It was 4-0 in the sixth when the Evangels made things interesting as a walk, hit by pitch and an error scored pinch runner Bryan McKissick that made it a three-run game. That brought the tying run to the plate, but a groundout ended the threat.
The Chaps then added three insurance tallies in the seventh on an RBI double by Joel Lutz and a two-run single by Silva.
Silva paced the Chaps offensively in the second game with three RBI on 2-of-3 at the plate.
The Evangels got on the board first in the opener when Z Tipton led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch.
But the Chaps had a big response with a run in the second before a pair of two-run singles by Wigberto Nevarez and Domrzalski fueled a seven-run third inning. Domrzalski also scored on the single thanks to an error that chased the ball to the wall.
LCU added five more runs in the fourth and it was 15-1 when the Evangels scored two in the sixth and three more in the seventh on a three-run double by Dustin Carlsward.
Brett Kauten had four RBI for the Chaps, while Domrzalski and Nevarez each drove in three runs.
The Evangels will next play a doubleheader at Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Monday afternoon (Mar. 11) at 2 p.m. before hosting Southern Nazarene University and Friends University on Tuesday (Mar. 12). MACU will play SNU at noon and Friends at 3 p.m.
