Cavaliers Overcome Lamb's Solid Outing and go on to Sweep Evangels

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Mid-America Christian University pitcher Brett Lamb pitched seven effective innings in the opening game Saturday (Apr. 20), but was out-dueled by St. Gregory's University hurler Ben Moore in a 1-0 win for the Cavaliers.  SGU then completed the sweep by winning the second game 13-6.

Lamb pitched around a walk and an error in the first that led to a second and third, one out jam.  Lamb struck out the next batter and then induced a bunt groundout to get out of the inning unscathed.

He then retired the next 10 batters he faced, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.  But Roberto Celestino ended the no-no with a lead-off infield single in the fifth and the Cavaliers got on the board with a two-out RBI double by Brian Bartlett.

That's all Moore would need, as he threw seven shutout innings and stranded 10 MACU base runners.

Lamb allowed only two hits and struck out two in his seven innings of work.

Trent Daniels, Brandon Spainhour and Bryan McKissick each had two hits for the Evangels in the opener.

Christian Torres drove in four runs in the nightcap for the Cavaliers, including a three-run triple in a four-run fourth inning.

SGU had jumped on the Evangels with six runs in the first inning before MACU responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning, including an RBI single by Dustin Carlsward.

Cody Guenthart had three RBI in the second game for the Cavaliers and Luke Taylor hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Carlsward, Isaac Treadaway and Christian Hill each had a pair of hits in the second game for the Evangels, with Kory Palmer driving home two runs.

The Evangels and Cavaliers with play another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 21) at 1 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla. to wrap up the series.
