OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers swept the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in a twinbill by scores of 10-4 and 5-0 Thursday afternoon (Apr. 25) at James Curtis Field.
The Drovers scored a run in each of the first three innings of the nightcap as sacrifice flies by Brian Vigo and Jared Coon along with an RBI single from Konrad Mueller made it 3-0.
MACU had a golden opportunity to make noise with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but USAO hurler Seth Sturgeon struck out two straight and induced a fly out to end the threat.
After RBI singles by Chance Hill and Daniel Edwards put the Drovers up 5-0 in the sixth, the Evangels again threatened in the bottom of the inning when a lead-off double by Z Tipton and an infield single by Taylor Daniels put runners at first and second with no one out. Sturgeon though once again pitched out of it by retiring the next three batters.
Sturgeon allowed only three hits and struck out four in the win. MACU starter Christian Hill allowed only two earned runs in his four innings of work.
The Drovers also jumped on top of the opener with two in the first and then added another in the third on an RBI single by Zach Gonzalez.
An RBI single by Dustin Carlsward scored Trent Daniels in bottom of the third to put the Evangels on the board, but USAO put it away with a five-run fifth inning. Edwards and Owen Adams each drove in two runs in the big inning that was aided by a pair of miscues by the Evangels.
Hill singled home Bryan McKissick as the Evangels scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Blake McMullen threw five innings and struck out eight with one run allowed to pick up the win, while Brett Lamb gave up three earned runs in six innings for the Evangels.
Carlsward went 3-of-4 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Evangels' offense.
The two schools are scheduled to play another doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 27) at 1 p.m. in Chickasha, Okla. to wrap up the regular season.
