OKLAHOMA CITY -- Freshman hurler Christian Hill is beginning to earn the nickname of "big game" pitcher on the MACU campus after pitching his second complete game victory in the last nine days over a ranked opponent, this time in a 1-0 win over the No. 2-ranked Oklahoma City Stars as the Mid-America Christian University Evangels salvaged a split Saturday afternoon (Apr. 6) at James Curtis Field. Hill also beat the then No. 6-ranked Rogers State University Hillcats 2-1 back on Mar. 28 in Claremore, Okla.
Hill received all the run support he would need in the first inning on a lead-off homer by JP Seifried and made it stand the rest of the way. The Lawton, Okla. native struck out five and walked only two in his six innings of work.
Hill blanked the Stars on four hits through the first five innings before escaping a second and third, one-out jam in the sixth. He got out of it unscathed by inducing a groundout and then a fly-out to center.
He then had to pitch around a lead-off single in the seventh, but got help when pinch-runner Dalton Bernardi was thrown out by catcher Brandon Spainhour trying to advance on a wild pitch. He finished off the win by getting Josh Dickey to fly out to right.
Seifried went 2-of-3 at the plate, picking up two of the Evangels' three hits in the nightcap.
The Stars took the opener 7-1 behind four RBI by Jonathan Sigado, including a three-run blast in a four-run fifth inning that blew the game open.
MACU starter Levi Nelson was effective through the first four innings, limiting the Stars to just a run.
The Evangels got on the board in the seventh when Jerry McNew scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Austin Hilterbran.
Shane Henderson pitched five scoreless innings and struck out four to pick up the win for OCU.
The Evangels will next play a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 9) at McPherson College at 4 p.m. in McPherson, Kan.
