OKLAHOMA CITY – Mid-America Christian University has named Marcus Moeller as the new Head Women's Basketball Coach, the university announced today (June 13). He replaces Roman Owen, who recently stepped down to take over the Film Coordinator position at the University of Oklahoma.
Moeller is very familiar with the MACU women's basketball program and the athletic department after serving as an assistant coach for the past two seasons and also the past year in the role of Assistant to the Athletic Director.
"I am so excited to move Marcus into the head women's basketball coaching position," MACU Athletic Director Craig Ruiz said. "We are certainly blessed to have him in this role! His recruiting and coaching skills for this region and nationally give MACU an edge on the competition. I am looking forward to watching what Marcus will do with the program. His vision, expertise and spiritual leadership make this an easy transition!"
Prior to arriving at MACU, Moeller served three years as an assistant coach at Missouri Southern State University under the tutorship of head coach Maryann Mitts. In those three seasons, Moeller helped MSSU compile an overall combined record of 51-33 and qualify for three MIAA conference tournaments.
"MACU just hired not only one of the most promising coaches in the country, but also one fine man," Mitts said. "I have known Marcus since he was 14 years old and have had the privilege to watch him grow up in the coaching profession since then. His work ethic is unmatched and his passion for the game of basketball and Christ is honorable. He epitomizes the values of what coaching should represent – preparing student-athletes for the world through the game of basketball. Marcus Moeller is a winner!"
Before coaching at MSSU, Moeller had a successful playing career at Ozark Christian College in Joplin where he played in all 147 games over a four-year span. Moeller, a two-year captain, averaged eight points and five assists while helping lead the Ambassadors to a 24-16 record his senior season.
Moeller earned a three-year Associate's degree in Christian Education from Ozark Christian College in 2008 and a BS in General Studies from Missouri Southern in 2010.
"I am very humbled and honored to have been chosen to take over the reins of the Women's Basketball program at Mid-America Christian University," Moeller said. "I would like to thank President Dr. John Fozard, Chief Administration Officer Mr. Owen Sevier, and Athletic Director Mr. Craig Ruiz for the support and strong vote of confidence they have extended. I also want to thank my fiancée Hannah (Owen) for her overwhelming support."
"I have been blessed to work with two great head coaches the past five years in Maryann Mitts (Missouri Southern) and Roman Owen (MACU). The experience that I gained working under their guidance and tutorship has been invaluable in my growth, both as a coach and as a person. I am undoubtedly a product of the massive number of people that have invested in my personal and professional life, and am exponentially grateful for their support and mentorship."
"I am very excited about the future of our basketball program and the young ladies that are going to represent this program, athletic department and university."
