No. 3 Lions Hold Off Evangels, 82-77

Waxahachie, Texas -- The No. 3-ranked and defending NAIA Runner Up Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions used a second half run to take control and then held off the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 82-77 in Sooner Athletic Conference action Saturday evening (Jan. 4) in Waxahachie, Texas.

The Evangels led by four at the 12:44 mark as consecutive buckets by Josh Minner and Semar Farris made it 53-49, but that's when the Lions made their push.

A three by Caleb Feemster and six points from Dominique Rambo sparked an 11-2 spurt over the next three minutes that put SAGU in front 60-55.

It was a three-point deficit when Feemster scored five straight points to stretch the lead to 67-59 with 5:10 left.

After a three by Angelo Lewis and a score from Farris helped make it a four-point game, the Lions ripped off seven straight points as a three by Rambo gave SAGU its largest lead of the game at 77-66 with 1:52 remaining.

The Evangels (7-3, 3-1 SAC) weren't finished though and put together a quick 8-2 spurt to claw within 78-74 with 25 seconds left.

But Feemster got behind the Evangels' defense on the ensuing inbound play and hit a layup to finally put it away.

The Evangels got off to a good start and took an early 13-6 lead five minutes into the contest.

SAGU then responded with an 11-2 run to lead 17-15 at the 11:59 mark of the opening half.

MACU held a 35-29 lead with 3:33 left, only to have the Lions end the half on a 10-3 run to lead 39-38 at the break.

Lewis led four Evangels in double-figures with 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, followed by Davis with 18 points.  Farris added 15 and Jarius Wilson chipped in with 12.

Rambo led all scorers with 32 points to go along with seven assists, seven steals and six boards.  Feemster scored 20 points, including 4-of-8 from three-point distance.

MACU held a 45-38 edge on the glass, but were hurt by 23 turnovers.

The Evangels will next play at Oklahoma Baptist University Tuesday night (Jan. 7) at 8 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
