OKLAHOMA CITY -- In her debut for the Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels, senior center Alexia Kelley recorded a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds while Ashlee Ferguson scored a game-high 21 points to lead MACU to a season-opening 82-74 victory over the Central Baptist College Lady Mustangs.
With the score tied 26-26, the Lady Evangels took control by bridging a 19-4 spurt over the final 4:54 of the opening half and then the first 36 seconds of the second stanza to take a commanding 45-30 lead.
CBC later rallied within eight as a three-pointer by Audrey Moran capped a 12-6 run that cut the lead to 66-58 with 5:36 left.
But Ferguson halted the run with a three and after Deanna Adkins hit a trey to again make it an eight-point game, Ferguson answered with another three of her own and then a bucket from Maclayn Massey stretched the lead back to 13 with just 4:24 left.
The closest CBC could get from that point was seven with just 55 seconds left and a score from Alliyah Spatafora with 44 seconds left put it away.
Kelley's 20 points came on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line. Her 14 boards were also a game-high. Ferguson poured in five threes and Massey also scored in double-figures with 12 points. Spatafora dished out a game-high seven assists.
Adkins led the Lady Mustangs with 21 points and Aaliyah Brock added 12 points.
MACU out-rebounded CBC 53-49 overall and limited them to only 28.6 percent (20-of-70) from the floor.
The Lady Evangels will next face Lyon College (Ark.) at home Monday evening (Nov. 3) at 5:30 p.m.
