OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University are now 5-0 on the season by overcoming a sluggish start and upending the Friends University Falcons 65-49 tonight (Nov. 11) inside the Gaulke Activity Center. The 5-0 start is the Evangels' best since joining the NAIA in 2007.
Tonight, the Evangels had to rebound after finding themselves down 18-12 at the 9:24 mark of the first half.
A three by Reggie Davis keyed a 6-0 spurt that tied the score and then a bucket from Semar Farris gave the Evangels their first lead of the game at 22-20 and MACU went on to a 26-22 lead at the break.
After Toby Baxter brought the Falcons within one with a three to start the second half, Jerrick Massenburge scored eight points to fuel a 17-2 run over a seven minute span to expand the edge to 43-27 with 12:28 left.
The Falcons fought back as four straight points from Brett Williams cut the lead to nine, but treys by Farris, Jarius Wilson and Jerrick Warren along with consecutive baskets from Brock Hunter powered a 13-4 run that extended the edge to the biggest of the game at 61-43 with just 3:29 remaining.
Farris and Wilson each scored 14 points to lead the Evangels, with Massenburge adding 11. Josh Smith added seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Williams was the lone Falcon in double-figures with 15 points.
The Evangels (5-0) overcame a slow start shooting (10-of-32, 31.3 percent) in the first half to shoot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) in the second stanza.
MACU also out-rebounded the Falcons 43-31 overall and 17-11 on the offensive glass.
The Evangels will next play another school from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference next Tuesday night (Nov. 18) at Bethany College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Lindsborg, Kan.
