OKLAHOMA CITY -- Gilbert Gyamfi converted a four-point play with two seconds left to give the John Brown University Golden Eagles an improbable 75-74 win over the No. 17-ranked Mid-America Christian University Evangels Thursday night (Feb. 20) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
The loss is the Evangels' fourth straight and drops them into a third-place tie with the St. Gregory's University Cavaliers at 10-7 in the league. MACU is at SGU Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) in the NAIA Game of the Week.
The Evangels had taken a 74-71 lead on a layup by Angelo Lewis with 1:10 remaining and had possession before a turnover gave the Golden Eagles the ball with the shot clock off.
Gyamfi then stepped into a three and drilled it while drawing a foul and then calmly sank the game-winning freebie at the charity stripe.
Down the stretch, Gyamfi took over for the Golden Eagles by scoring their final nine points over the final 3:39.
The Evangels got off to a good start early, darting out to an 11-3 lead on a three by Jarius Wilson and a bucket by Lewis at the 16:30 mark.
JBU jumped right back into it with an 11-2 spurt to lead 14-13 with 12:51 left in the first half.
The Evangels built the lead as high as 10 in the opening half before the Golden Eagles closed to within 36-29 at the break.
Lewis led the Evangels with 21 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Wilson scored 13 and Reggie Davis added 11. Semar Farris had 10 points along with seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists.
Kofi Josephs led all scorers with 26 points followed Gyamfi with 23. Kurtis Phillips secured a game-high 10 boards for JBU.
It was a tale of two halves shooting for the Evangels, going only 34.5 percent (10-of-29) in the second half after shooting 43.2 percent (16-of-37) in the first half.
The Golden Eagles warmed up to a 52 percent (13-of-25) clip in the second half to wind up at 49 percent (25-of-51) overall.
Tip-off of the Evangels' matchup at SGU on Saturday is set for 5 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
