No. 20 Rams Sweep Evangels as McLeod Tosses No-Hitter in Second Game

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 20-ranked Texas Wesleyan University Rams took two games from the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the Sooner Athletic Conference openers for both teams Friday afternoon (Feb. 28) at James Curtis Field.  The Rams won the opener 6-1 and then took the nightcap 10-0 behind a no-hitter from pitcher Mitch McLeod.

McLeod struck out 11 batters in his seven hitless innings and walked five.  He was effective by keeping the ball low, as of the eight outs the Evangels made contact, seven were groundouts.

MACU starter Zach Abbot started the game with two scoreless frames before exiting in the third with an undisclosed injury.

Abbott was charged with two runs in the third on a two-run double by Jake Howeth that got the Rams on the board.

Conway kept it a two-run game until the sixth when Jake Rickman doubled home a run and Manny Sanchez singled home two to give the Rams a 5-0 lead.

A two-run double by Garrett Gray then keyed a five-run seventh inning for TWU that put the game away.

Sam Martin was nearly as dominant as McLeod for the Rams in the opener, allowing only one run in seven innings with nine strikeouts.

The Rams scored first with a run in the first inning then struck for three more in the third on a lead-off homer by Adam Turpin and a two-run triple by Tyler Kamtz.

The Evangels avoided the shutout when Logan Glasgow singled to lead off the fourth and was chased home on a single by Chevin Noone.

A two-run double by Sanchez in the fifth provided two insurance runs for the Rams.

Christian Hill also pitched seven innings in the opener for the Evangels and gave up four earned runs with four strikeouts.

Glasgow was 2-of-3 at the plate for the Evangels with a run scored.

The Evangels will look to salvage a game in the series finale tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 1) at 1 p.m.
