OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels fell twice today to the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions by scores of 1-0 and 6-5 at James Curtis Field.
MACU starter Zach Abbott was a tough luck loser in the opener, throwing six shutout innings before surrendering a lead-off homer in the seventh to Jared Denton that proved to be the game-winning run.
Abbott struck out three and walked none and gave up only four hits in his seven innings of work.
The Evangels couldn't push across any runs, leaving eight runners overall including stranding the bases loaded twice.
Jarrod Pisors pitched the first 3 2/3 innings for the Lions, followed by Tucker Burt for the final 3 1/3. Burt took home the win for SAGU.
The nightcap featured more offense, but the Lions still found a way to come out on top.
With the score tied 5-5 in the fifth, Jonathan Santiago singled home Bryant Threadgill for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning tally.
The Evangels had just rallied from four runs down with a four-run fourth inning that featured a two-run double by Z Tipton and a run-scoring double from A.J. Wilson. Chevin Noone also had a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Game one starter Pisors came on in relief in the bottom of the fourth for the Lions and pitched four shutout innings to get the win.
Aaron Conway blanked the Lions over the final two innings out of the bullpen for the Evangels.
Logan Glasgow had two hits for MACU with an RBI, while Threadgill and Preston Hornbeck were each 2-of-3 for the Lions.
The Evangels will next host Ottawa University next Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 18) for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
