Evangels Take Opener 4-2 Over Ottawa Before Settling for Split

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels scored two runs in the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 gridlock to win the opening game of a doubleheader over the Ottawa University Braves 4-2 today (Mar. 18) at James Curtis Field.  The Braves then returned the favor by scoring a run in the seventh to win the second game 6-5.

A.J. Wilson led off the sixth by being hit by a pitch and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Z Tipton.

Ryan Moesley then plated Victor Cuevas with his third hit of the game to give the Evangels a valuable insurance run.

Wyatt Glasgow then came on in relief of starter Chevin Noone and struck out two to work around a lead-off single and close out the win.

Noone got the win after pitching six effective innings with two runs allowed and five strikeouts.

Moesley was 3-of-4 with a double and RBI. Tipton and Daniel Thompson were 1-of-3 with an RBI, with Christian Hill also driving in a run with a groundout in a two-run third inning.

Alejandro Villegas was 2-of-4 with an RBI for the Braves in the opener.

In the nightcap, it was the Braves that produced a late-inning clutch hit as pinch hitter Dane Raber came through with a two-out single that scored Jacob Loucks for the game-winning tally.

The Evangels had rallied from a five-run deficit with two runs in the fourth and a three-run fifth inning.

Back-to-back RBI doubles by Dustin Carlsward and Cuevas got the Evangels on the board in the fourth and Jerry McNew then delivered a game-tying two-run homer in the fifth after Matt Cruz singled home Taylor Daniels.

Nick Deichler got the Braves on the board with his second homer of the twinbill, a two-run shot in the first inning.

Deichler was 3-of-4 overall in the second game with three RBI.

McNew and Carlsward were each 2-of-3 for the Evangels in the nightcap, while Cruz went 2-of-4 at the plate.

The Evangels will next play a three-game series at Sooner Athletic Conference front-runner Wayland Baptist University beginning with a single-game Friday afternoon (Mar. 21) in Plainview, Texas.  WBU is off to a 9-0 start in the SAC and is 21-6 overall.
