Plainview, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels lost the opener to the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers 6-2 and then dropped the second game 12-2 today (Mar. 21) in Plainview, Texas.
The wins moved the front-running Pioneers to 23-6 overall and a perfect 11-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Evangels jumped on top 2-0 in the opener when Daniel Thompson singled home Ryan Moesley and Bryan McKissick scored on a wild pitch.
The lead was short-lived however as Jovany Padilla doubled home two runs to key a five-run third inning that put the Pioneers on top by three runs.
WBU then tacked on another insurance run in the fourth inning.
MACU starter Robert Santana was effective other than the rough third inning, striking out 10 batters and allowing only four hits in six innings.
Tom Bailey pitched seven innings and struck out 12 to pick up the win for the Pioneers.
Thompson and Moesley each went 2-of-3 for the Evangels.
Josh Alexander powered the WBU offensive attack in the second game with five RBI on a 2-of-4 effort at the plate in the nightcap.
WBU took control early with a five-run first inning before the Evangels got two back on a two-run homer by Jake Magness in the second inning.
Alexander then hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to break the game open again and a two-run homer by Padilla in the sixth inning put it away.
Mason Taylor got the win in the second game for the Pioneers after allowing two runs and striking out eight in seven innings.
The two schools will play a single-game tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 22) to wrap up the series.
