Coyotes Outslug Evangels in Doubleheader Sweep

Salina, Kan. -- The Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes used separate 11-run innings in each game to sweep past the Mid-America Christian University Evangels by scores of 16-10 and 15-14 today (Mar. 31) in Salina, Kan.

The Coyotes in the first game scored 11 runs in the fourth inning after the Evangels jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  Michael McGovern hit a grand slam and Jeremy Rosenthal hit a three-run homer to power the big frame.

But the Evangels came back to score five runs in the fifth as Taylor Daniels singled home two runs and RBI doubles from Z Tipton and Matt Cruz cut the deficit to just a run.

KWU responded with a five-run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth to put it away.

Jerry McNew went 2-of-4 at the dish in the opener for the Evangels with a run driven in.

McGovern and Rosenthal combined to drive in nine runs in the first game for the Coyotes.

It was more of the same in the nightcap, except the Evangels exploded for eight runs in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Daniels tripled to lead off the inning and scored the first run on a single by Tipton.  The big blow of the inning was a three-run blast by A.J. Wilson that was followed by a solo homer by Jake Magness.

After Omar Sadoui hit a two-run homer for the Coyotes in the bottom of the inning, the Evangels answered right back with two in the third to go back up by eight runs.

The Coyotes scored two more in the third, only to have the Evangels remain in firm control as an RBI single by Daniel Thompson and a two-run single from Dustin Carlsward led a four-run fourth inning that made it 14-4.

But the Coyotes again staged an 11-run inning in the bottom of the fourth and that proved to be all they would need to hold on for the win.

Sadoui hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot, while Dalton Eastep, Jake Hawkins and Jordan Rousselle each drove in two runs in the frame.

Carlsward and Wilson each had four RBI for the Evangels and Thompson drove in a pair of runs in the second game for the Evangels.

The Evangels will next begin a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series Thursday afternoon (Apr. 3) at Southwestern Christian University starting at 2 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
