Dallas, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels notched a huge series victory over the No. 13-ranked Northwood University Knights by taking the second game today (Mar. 8) of a twinbill 7-6 in Dallas, Texas. The Knights won the opener 3-0 to salvage a game in the series.
The series win puts the Evangels into sixth place in the rugged Sooner Athletic Conference, one-half game behind the Knights.
The Evangels trailed 2-1 in the nightcap when a four-run second inning put them in command.
Four separate RBI singles in the inning from Taylor Daniels, Matt Cruz, Daniel Thompson and Logan Glasgow put the Evangels up by three runs.
MACU added a run in the third and sixth before the Knights made things interesting with a four-run sixth inning.
Casey Mullinez contributed a two-run single that made it a one-run game. With the tying-run at second, MACU starter Christian Hill induced a groundout to get out of the inning with the Evangels still on top.
Hill was then able to pitch around a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh when Thompson threw out Joee Reyna trying to steal second.
Hill went the distance for the Evangels to pick up the win, giving up four earned runs in his seven innings of work.
Daniels and Cruz each had two hits in the second game win for the Evangels (4-10, 2-3 SAC).
The Evangels couldn't break through against NU starter Jessue Alvarado in the first game as they stranded 10 runners on base.
A two-run double by Luis Roman in the bottom of the third and an RBI double from Angel Rodriguez in the fourth gave Alvarado all the run support he would need.
MACU starter Zach Abbott was also solid on the mound, allowing three runs and striking out seven in six innings.
Dustin Carlsward had two of the Evangels' six hits in the opener.
The Evangels will next host No. 20-ranked Texas Wesleyan University in a makeup game Monday afternoon (Mar. 10) at 2 p.m. at James Curtis Field.
