No. 1 OBU Explodes in Sixth to Pull Away From Evangels

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University Bison scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to turn a two-run game into a rout and defeated the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 15-1 in the second game of a three-game set today (Apr. 11) at James Curtis Field.

MACU starter Robert Santana was effective through five innings, striking out 11 and giving up three runs.

But Santana also walked seven through the first five frames and gave up a lead-off walk in the sixth that led to trouble.

Ridge Hoopii-Haslam drew the free pass and then stole second before scoring on a single by Joey Szczepanski that made it 4-1.

Santana was then taken out following an RBI double by Jeff Ricker and another walk.

That's when the floodgates opened, as two-run doubles by Steven Knudson and Garrett Gallacher book ended four-straight hits that put in OBU in full command.

Szczepanski then came up again and capped the big inning with a two-run homer.

The Evangels trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth but got on the board when a fielder's choice by Ryan Moseley plated Z Tipton.

Dustin Carlsward and A.J. Wilson each went 2-of-3 at the plate for the Evangels (11-24, 7-13 SAC) on the day.

Szczepanski paced the Bison (35-6, 15-4 SAC) with four RBI in going 3-of-4, while Garrett Roberts was a perfect 4-of-4 with two RBI.

OBU will host the Evangels tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 12) at 1 p.m. in the series finale in Shawnee, Okla.
