OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers scored a combined 24 runs in sweeping the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 12-0 and 12-4 today (Apr. 19) at James Curtis Field.
The losses push the Evangels into a tie for eighth place with St. Gregory's University for the eighth and final spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament. MACU holds the tiebreaker with SGU by winning the season series 2-1.
In the opener, MACU starter Robert Santana struck out the side in the first before running into trouble when the first four Drovers reached base in the second.
USAO got on the board when Joe Black drew a bases loaded walk with no one out. After Santana struck out the next two hitters, a passed ball led to the second run and a two-run double by Chris Musick and an RBI single from Jaime Gurrola put the Drovers up 5-0.
Musick then keyed a four-run third inning with a two-run single that had USAO in front 9-0.
A pair of errors in the fourth inning led to three more runs for the Drovers that put it away.
Jose Flores carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning until A.J. Wilson hit a single to break it up with two outs.
Flores lasted six innings and allowed two hits in the shut out win.
After USAO jumped on top 3-0 in the nightcap, the Evangels battled back in the bottom of the third as an RBI single by Dustin Carlsward and a run-scoring double from Wilson helped MACU score three to tie the score.
But the Drovers got the lead back in the fourth on an infield single from Musick and then took command when an RBI double by Eddie Malone and a three-run homer by Francisco Bolanos made it 8-3.
Victor Cuevas drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Evangels within 8-4, only to have the Drovers plate three more in the sixth to put it away.
Cuevas drove in two runs for the Evangels in the second game, while Wilson and Christian Hill each picked up two hits.
Musick was a perfect 4-of-4 with two RBI for the Drovers, with Malone and Bolanos each driving in three runs.
The Evangels will next host Friends University Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 22) at 3 p.m. MACU bested Friends 6-2 on the road last Tuesday (Apr. 15).
