OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 14-ranked Oklahoma City University Stars' ace Chris Pike limited the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to only one hit as the Stars took the opener of a three-game series 10-0 today (Apr. 24) at James Curtis Field.
Even with the loss, the Evangels remain tied for the eighth and final spot in the upcoming Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with St. Gregory's University, with the Evangels holding the tiebreaker.
Daniel Thompson mustered the Evangels' (13-29, 7-18 SAC) only hit of the game with a one-out single in the first before being thrown out trying to steal second.
Pike then went on a tear, retiring the next 16 hitters he faced with nine strikeouts in that span.
After shutting out the Stars last season, MACU starter Christian Hill was again solid in the early going, sitting OCU down in order in the first before giving up a run in the second and third innings.
It was the fourth inning that proved to be Hill's undoing, as Adam Clark was hit by a pitch with two outs that led to a three-run homer by Chase Wright that made it 5-0.
Hill blanked the Stars over the next two frames before OCU got to him again in the seventh as Hunter Marcum hit a two-run double to key a three-run inning.
Adonis Askew then hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth that put it away for the Stars (30-16, 18-7 SAC).
Pike fanned 10 in his seven innings and Holden Lyons finished the game with a scoreless eighth.
The two schools will play again tomorrow night (Apr. 25) at 7 p.m. at OCU before returning to MACU for the series and regular season finale Saturday afternoon (Apr. 26) at 1 p.m.
