OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 14-ranked Oklahoma City University Stars captured the finale of a three-game series today (Apr. 26) 6-1 over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels at James Curtis Field.
The Evangels though have clinched the eighth and final spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament next weekend by virtue of the Evangels holding the tiebreaker over St. Gregory's University.
MACU starter Zach Abbott pitched well in his seven innings of work, allowing only four earned runs and tying a career-high with seven strikeouts.
The Oakdale, Calif. native sailed through the first five frames, holding the Stars to only one run on three hits before running into trouble in the sixth.
The first three hitters reached base, culminating with a two-run triple by Connor Lynch that put OCU in front 3-0.
After blanking the Stars in the seventh, OCU capitalized on two errors to plate three runs, with two being unearned. Garrett Foster had an RBI triple, with Lynch and Ryan Wright adding run-scoring singles in the inning.
The Evangels (13-31, 7-20 SAC) had got on the board in the fourth when an RBI groundout by Jake Magness scored A.J. Wilson to tie the score 1-1.
Senior Mat Owen came on in relief of Abbot in the eighth and fanned a career-best five hitters in two scoreless innings.
Michael Nolan got the win for the Stars (32-16, 20-7 SAC) by going six innings and allowing one run with six strikeouts.
Shane Henderson pitched the final three innings, blanking the Evangels on one hit to pick up the save.
