Drovers Slug Their Way Past Evangels 13-5 in Final Game of SAC Tournament

Shawnee, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels wrapped up the season with a 13-5 loss to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers in the final game of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament today (May 4) at Bison Field on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla.

The Drovers used the long ball to pull away from the Evangels, hitting three of their five blasts on the day in a six-run sixth inning that snapped a 4-4 tie.

Francisco Bolanos started the big inning with a two-run homer and that was followed by a three-run blast from Jaime Gurrola that suddenly put the Drovers up by five runs.

Cody Rieger then capped the inning with a solo homer that made it 10-4.

The Evangels (14-34) got one run back on an RBI double by Matt Cruz that scored Bryan McKissick, but the Drovers answered with a three-run homer by Warren Stehn in the bottom of the eighth to put it away.

Logan Glasgow doubled home Daniel Thompson in the first to give the Evangels an early lead before the Drovers (27-22) tied the score with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

The Evangels trailed 3-1 heading to the fourth when A.J. Wilson doubled home Dustin Carlward and then scored the tying run on an RBI single by Z Tipton.

After Chris Musick hit a solo homer to put USAO back on top, the Evangels pulled even once again on a run-scoring single by Cruz that plated McKissick.

Zach Abbott started for the Evangels and gave up seven earned runs in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Cruz and Tipton each had three hits to pace the Evangels' hitting attack, while McKissick went 2-of-3 on the day.

The Evangels without question made progress in head coach Mike Brown's third season at the helm, winning 14 games to nearly triple their win total of five last season.

With 15 letterwinners returning next year, including two starting pitchers, the Evangels will look to an even bigger step forward next season.
