OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels pulled away in the first half and never looked back in giving head coach Willie Holley his 799th career victory with an 83-64 rout of the No. 11-ranked Wayland Baptist University Pioneers tonight (Jan. 15) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
MACU held WBU 27 points below its season average, as the Pioneers entered tonight's contest as the top scoring team in the Sooner Athletic Conference at over 91 points per game.
The Evangels started out strong, scoring the first seven points of the game and then made it 19-10 on a score from Jerrick Massenburge at the 13:47 mark.
WBU then roared back with 14 straight points over the next seven minutes to jump ahead 24-19 at the 6:36 mark of the opening half.
But the Evangels answered quickly and took control as Semar Farris and Reggie Davis combined for nine points of a 13-0 push that made it 32-24 with 2:07 left.
The Evangels went on to a 37-28 lead at the break.
MACU cruised in the second half, scoring the first two baskets and maintained at least an 11-point lead the entire period.
The Evangels then methodically built the lead as high as 22 when two free throws by Brock Hunter ballooned the edge to 76-54 at the 2:33 mark of the second half.
Farris led the Evangels (11-6, 4-1 SAC) with game-highs of 18 points and seven assists. Hunter and Chris Runnels each scored 13 and Davis added 12.
Robert Waters had a team-high 11 points for the Pioneers (14-2, 3-2 SAC), while Bunja Yaboe and Kendall Durant each had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Evangels controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Pioneers 50-40 overall and 34-25 on the defensive boards.
Holley will look to become just the 17th coach in basketball history to reach 800 wins on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) at 5 p.m. at Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Okla.
