Lady Evangels Hold Off SAGU, 72-68

Waxahachie, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels grabbed the lead for good in the second half and held on for a 72-68 victory over the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lady Lions in Sooner Athletic Conference action today (Jan. 31) in Waxahachie, Texas.

The victory is the Lady Evangels' second straight and moves them into a three-way tie for fourth place in the SAC with a 6-4 conference mark.

The Lady Evangels appeared to have things under control when a bucket by Alexia Kelley gave them their largest lead of the game at 67-59 with just 1:26 left.

It remained a seven-point lead with 37 seconds left when a technical foul whistled on Kelley led to two free throws by Taylor Hill and then a three from Monica Dorsey resulted in a five-point possession that suddenly made it a two-point game with 18 seconds left.

But Lindsey Mann calmly sank four free throws down the stretch to put it away for the Lady Evangels.

The Lady Evangels trailed by two at the half but a three by Felicia Foster and a score from Tierra Brown during the first 1:17 of the second half put MACU on top 37-34.

Following a three by Hill that knotted the score for the sixth time in the game, Kelley scored inside to give the Lady Evangels a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.

Kelley led the Lady Evangels (13-6, 6-4 SAC) with 18 points and also had eight rebounds.  Foster scored 13 points, while Mann and Ashlee Ferguson each added 11.  Brown also had eight boards for the Lady Evangels and Alliyah Spatafora dished out a team-high five assists.

Hill paced the Lady Lions (10-12, 1-9 SAC) with 18 points and five assists.  Kassy Cox scored 16 and had nine rebounds, with Charity Page adding 14 points while also pulling down nine boards.

The Lady Evangels will next host No. 2-ranked and defending NAIA national champion Oklahoma City University Stars next Thursday night (Feb. 5) at 6 p.m. inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
