OKLAHOMA CITY – Nick Tate scored 21 points and Devonse Reed added 18 to lead the No. 10-ranked Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a 90-77 victory over the Bethany College Swedes tonight (Nov. 13) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
The win completes a season sweep of the Swedes after the Evangels won the first matchup 115-95 at Bethany earlier this season (Oct. 31).
The Evangels came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and outscored the Swedes 17-5 out of the gate behind six points each from Reed and Tate that extended a two-point lead to 57-43.
MACU continued to pull away as consecutive scores from Chris Runnels increased the edge to 63-47 at the 12:10 mark of the second half.
The game was never in doubt from that point and later a putback by Bryon Miller gave the Evangels their biggest lead of the night at 86-68 with 4:03 left.
Down 12-7 early in the first half, Tate caught fire and scored seven straight points to put MACU in front at the 13:10 mark.
Jerrick Massenburge then entered the game and quickly hit consecutive threes that finished an 8-0 spurt that gave the Evangels an eight-point lead of 22-14.
The Swedes bounced back when Gary Jones scored eight of his 17 first-half points that keyed an 11-5 push that brought Bethany within 27-25.
Following a Miller three that brought the Evangel lead back to 34-28, Jones scored inside to cap a 7-0 run that put the Swedes on top for the first time since 2-0.
The two teams then exchanged the lead until a pair of free throws by Ex'Zavia Seaton gave the Evangels (4-1) a 40-38 lead at the break.
Tate's 21 points included 8-of-15 shooting overall and 5-of-8 from three-point distance, while Reed shot 8-of-13 from the field. Runnels scored 13 along with a team-high seven rebounds and Massenburge added 10 points.
Jones finished with a team-high 21 for the Swedes but was held in check after his 17 point opening half. Larry McLin scored 14 and Jonathan Gibson had 11. Ian Merzwinski recorded a game-high nine boards for Bethany (2-3).
The Evangels will now wrap up their four games in five nights stretch with a Top-25 matchup tomorrow evening (Nov. 14) at home against No. 20 Philander Smith College. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
