OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels began the game by scoring the first 19 points 19-0 and cruised to a 107-73 victory tonight (Dec. 18) over the No. 13-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
In handing the Pioneers their worst loss since the 2004-05 season, the Evangels also avenged an earlier 105-89 setback to MNU back on Nov. 2.
The Evangels used a renewed defensive effort along with five different players scoring to fuel the early surge, led by eight points from Jerrick Massenburge.
MNU fought back within 10 before the Evangels (9-3) stretched the lead back to 49-32 at the break.
The Evangels began the second half much like the first, as Bryon Miller scored all eight points of an 8-2 spurt to make it 57-34 at the 17:42 mark.
After the Pioneers (8-4) scored the next four points, the Evangels again put the clamps down and put it away with a 26-7 burst that doubled a 19-point lead to 83-45 with 8:59 remaining.
Devonse Reed led the Evangels with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 overall from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point distance and a perfect 3-of-3 at the charity stripe. The Evangels also got 16 points each from Nick Tate and Ex'Zavia Seaton. Miller recorded a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds and Malcolm Mann had 11 points along with five steals.
Marshawn Arnold paced the Pioneers with 20 points and six boards.
MACU out-rebounded the Pioneers 48-40 overall and held a 44-32 edge in points in the paint.
The Evangels will now take time off for the Christmas holiday before resuming action on Jan. 5 at Haskell Indian Nations University at 7 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan. MACU bested Haskell 103-72 in the season opener (10/27) this year.
