Dominant Pitching Lifts Evangels to DH Sweep of Missouri Valley College

OKLAHOMA CITY -- What a difference a day makes for the Mid-America Christian University Evangels baseball squad and pitching staff.  After allowing 27 total runs yesterday (Feb. 13) in losing a twinbill to the Missouri Valley College Vikings, the Evangels stifled the Vikings to only three runs combined (one earned run) today (Feb. 14) in sweeping the doubleheader at James Curtis Field.

The two victories put the Evangels at 6-4 overall, their best start through 10 games since joining the NAIA in 2008.

Aaron Carroll pitched six solid innings in the opener to lead the Evangels to a 2-0 win.

Carroll blanked the Vikings on only three hits and four strikeouts before giving way to Wyatt Glasgow in the seventh.

Glasgow came on with the tying runs in scoring position, but induced a grounder back to the mound and then struck out the final two batters to lock down the save.

The Evangels scored their two runs in the sixth, one off an error and the other on an RBI single by Logan Glasgow.

It was Martin Nolasco's turn in the nightcap and he answered by going 5.1 innings and allowing only one earned run on two hits and three strikeouts as the Evangels won 5-3.

Chevin Noone put the Evangels on top with an run-scoring single in the bottom of the first and MACU tacked on another in the third thanks to a bases-loaded walk to Brandon Bordonaro.

The Evangels then added some insurance tallies with three in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Two miscues led to two runs by the Vikings in the fifth and Lucas Doerhoff then hit his third homer of the series in the sixth to make it a two-run game.

But Zach Carley came on in relief of Nolasco with the tying run at the plate and struck out two to get out of the inning.

Glasgow then did his thing again in the seventh, striking out the side to earn his second save of the day and third of the season.

The Evangels are next set to host Bethany College on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 17) for another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
