No. 14 Evangels Stay Hot at OBU, 84-80

Shawnee, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels won for the 13th time in their last 15 games with an 84-80 victory at the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison tonight (Feb. 19) at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla. .

The win keeps the Evangels in first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference by one game over Wayland Baptist University at 12-3 in the league.

The Evangels grabbed the lead at the 18:50 mark of the opening half and never relinquished it despite the Bison three times coming within a single point.

The last two occasions OBU clawed within one, Jerrick Massenburge answered with a trey each time, with the last being a three to make it 64-60 with 6:02 remaining.

Massenburge then scored to stretch the lead to six before hitting another trey that teamed with a pair of threes from Semar Farris that increased the edge back to 10 at 79-69 at the 1:09 mark.

But the Bison refused to go quietly as threes by Aaron Abram and Cale Jackson along with a three-point play from D.J. Hervy suddenly cut the lead to 83-80 with six seconds left.

Farris then drew a foul and made one free throw to ice the win with two seconds left.

Farris led the Evangels (19-8, 12-3 SAC) with 24 points and five assists while knocking down 5-of-8 from the perimeter.  Brock Hunder scored 14 along with a team-high nine rebounds.  Massenburge added 12 and Reggie Davis chipped in with 10 points.

Bryon Miller paced six Bison (17-10, 6-9 SAC) in double-figure scoring with 18 points, followed by 14 points from Jackson.  Ty Allen had 13 points, with Abram adding 12 and a team-best nine boards.
