OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels had to settle for a 6-6 tie Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21) against the Briar Cliff University Chargers after the game was called after seven innings due to darkness. Earlier in the day, the Evangels fell 12-11 to the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats after a rally from 12-3 down came up just short.
The Evangels also rallied to tie the score against the Chargers with two runs in the seventh inning.
Trailing 6-4, Wyatt Glasgow and Kody Jones each walked to lead off the inning and Glasgow scored to make it 6-5 before Jones was chased home on an RBI single by Chevin Noone that pulled the Evangels even.
But that's all the Evangels could get and darkness forced MACU's first tie since the 2010 season.
The Evangels got two hits apiece from Daniel Thompson and Riley Barnum that fueled their 10-hit attack.
Martin Nolasco lasted the full seven innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out 12.
Scott Morton led the Chargers with two RBI.
Errors were the theme of the Evangels' opening game against the Wildcats, as MACU committed eight miscues that led to all 12 runs being unearned.
It was a 12-3 deficit heading to the bottom of the fifth when the Evangels made their move. A bases-clearing RBI triple by Brandon Bordonaro and a run-scoring single by Brandon Schoelkopf plated Bordano suddenly made it 12-7.
After a homer by Daniel Thompson in the sixth, an RBI double by Glasgow and RBI singles from Matt Henshall and Matt Cruz brought the Evangels within a run with one out in the seventh.
The Evangels eventually got the potential tying and winning run in scoring position, but Chevin Noone smoked a shot to left field that was caught to end the game.
Bordonaro was 2-of-4 and drove in five runs, while Schoelkopf went 3-of-4. The Evangels also got two hits from Noone, Cruz and Kevin Jones.
Aaron Carroll started for the Evangels and went three innings, with three hits allowed, three strikeouts and no earned runs.
Zach Carley came on to pitch the last four innings and also allowed no earned runs with two strikeouts.
The Evangels are next set to open up Sooner Athletic Conference action with a three-game series against USAO, starting with a home game Thursday afternoon (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m.
