OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City University Stars made only two of their first eight free-throw attempts through the first 39:48, but hit all six from the charity stripe in the final 12 seconds to seal a dramatic 72-67 win over the No. 14-ranked Mid-America Christian University Evangels in Sooner Athletic Conference action tonight (Feb. 5) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
It's the second time this season the game has gone down to the wire between the two schools, with the Evangels winning 81-78 on a game-winning three by Jerrick Massenburge in the final seconds at OCU back on Jan. 10.
The Evangels weathered a 29.4 percent (10-of-34) in the opening half to wind up tied 36-36 at the break, but again came out sluggish in the second half and twice fell behind by 12 points before making their charge back with 7:40 remaining.
It was a 60-48 deficit when a basket by Jason Nwisienyi began a 17-4 burst that put the Evangels on top by one with 57 seconds left.
Six points from Jerrick Massenburge, five from Jarius Wilson and four from Semar Farris fueled the spurt that gave the Evangels their first lead since the 18:39 mark of the second half.
It was short lived though as R.J. McGhee drove in for a go-ahead layup and following a defensive stop, Gary Inglett stepped to the line and hit two free throws to push the lead to three with 12 seconds left.
After Farris was fouled and sank two freebies to make it a one-point game, Inglett stepped up and nailed two more critical free throws that made it 70-67 with eight seconds remaining.
Farris was again fouled, but this time he misfired on both free-throw attempts and Inglett made two more free throws on the other end to ice the win for the Stars.
Farris led the Evangels (15-8, 8-3 SAC) with 16 points and seven assists, while Brock Hunter chipped in with 15 points. Massenburge scored 11 and Chris Runnels pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Inglett led everyone with a double-double of 25 points and 13 boards for OCU (11-6, 7-4 SAC). McGhee finished with 14 points, with Jamil Donovan and Tharone Chilton each recording six assists.
The Stars out-shot the Evangels soundly 48.3 percent (29-of-60) to 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field, but the Evangels managed to keep it close by forcing 17 giveaways that led to a 19-10 edge in points off turnovers.
The Evangels will look to snap their brief two-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at home against St. Gregory's University at 3 p.m.
