OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Wayland Baptist University Pioneers, who received votes in this week's NAIA Top 25 Coaches' poll, pounded out 20 hits in defeating the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 17-7 in the series finale today (Mar. 28) at James Curtis Field. The Pioneers outlasted the Evangels 5-2 in 12 innings in the opener yesterday (Mar. 27) and then won the nightcap 3-0.
The Evangels got on the board in the first on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Logan Glasgow, only to have Brayden Blackwell club a grand slam in the second inning to put the Pioneers on top.
MACU answered back in the bottom of the inning when Reggie Lindsey led off with a single and then flashed his speed by scoring from second on an infield single by Daniel Thompson that made it 4-2. Thompson then scored on a single by Glasgow that brought the Evangels within a run.
The Pioneers (24-12, 11-1 SAC) then broke it open as a three-run homer by Austin Davis capped a five-run fifth inning and a two-run blast by Will Bass in the seventh made it 11-3,
The Evangels (14-16-1, 3-7 SAC) fought back with four runs in the seventh, finished by a two-run shot by Lindsey that cut the deficit to four runs. A sacrifice fly by Tanner Ward scored A.J. Wilson for the first run of the inning and Riley Barnum also singled home Kody Jones.
But another home run by Davis, a two-run blast, keyed a six-run eighth-inning that put it away for the Pioneers.
Lindsey went 3-of-4 for the Evangels with two runs scored, while Thompson was 2-of-5.
Josh Alexander started for WBU and went five innings with two earned runs allowed to get the win. He also helped himself at the plate by going 4-of-5 with an RBI.
