OKLAHOMA CITY -- Brandon Bordonaro delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Mid-America Christian University Evangels a 4-3 victory over the Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College Saints today (Apr. 20) at James Curtis Field. The win gave the Evangels a sweep of the twinbill as they routed the Saints in the opener 13-0.
The wins give the Evangels 20 victories on the season, their most since the 2011 season.
Logan Glasgow started the inning with a single and moved into scoring-position on a single by Chevin Noone, which set up Bordonaro's game-winning, one-out single to left.
The Evangels had pulled even with two runs in the sixth when Bordonaro scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Lindsey. A bases-loaded walk to Matt Cruz earlier in the inning scored Noone to make it 3-2.
Hillsdale got three RBI from Caleb Caldwell to jump out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. Caldwell had an RBI groundout in the first and then a two-run double in the third.
An RBI single from Glasgow in the bottom of the fifth got the Evangels on the board.
Zach Carley settled in after giving up three runs in the first three innings to shut out the Saints over the next three frames to give the Evangels a chance to rally for the win. Matt Henshall then came on and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the win.
Noone was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate in the nightcap victory for the Evangels. Glasgow also went 2-of-4.
The Evangels (20-23-1) wasted no time jumping all over the Saints in the first game, plating one in the first and then six more in the second inning. MACU then put on the finishing touches by adding four more in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Daniel Thompson and Riley Barnum fueled the Evangels' offensive attack in the opening game win, each going 3-of-4 with Thompson driving home three runs and Barnum recording two RBI.
The Evangels also got two RBI from Glasgow, while Lindsey, Noone, Brandon Schoelkopf and Aaron Conway all produced two hits.
David Pope continued his stellar pitching, blanking the Saints in his six innings of work on three hits with six strikeouts. Pope has now pitched 14 straight scoreless innings, dating back to his eight shutout innings in a victory at Friends University back on Apr. 7.
Wyatt Glasgow then followed Pope and closed out the win with a spotless seventh inning with two strikeouts.
The Evangels will next begin a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at No. 4-ranked Oklahoma City University on Thursday night (Apr. 23) at 7 p.m.
