OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season with a 71-51 victory over the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes tonight (Nov. 9) inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
The 5-0 start to the season matches the 2011-12 season for their best start as an NAIA program.
The Lady Evangels put this win away by scoring 12 straight points that began with a layup by Mikki Flores at the end of the third quarter and then the first nine points of the fourth period.
Flores scored four of the nine points during the run to start the fourth and Jessica Fairley capped the spurt with a three that made it a comfortable 58-36 margin with 7:10 remaining.
From that point, the Lady Evangels kept the Coyotes at bay and maintained at least a 19-point lead, with the biggest edge twice coming at 24 points.
The Lady Evangels led for all but 45 seconds of the game, leading 22-15 at the end of the first quarter and then by double-figures at 33-23 at the break.
Flores led MACU with 17 points and nine assists, with Tamiyjah Smith recording a double-double of 14 points along with a career-high 12 rebounds.
Sarai Rodriguez and Brittany Thompson each reached double-digit scoring with 10 points each for the Lady Evangels.
Jenna Farris led the Coyotes with 12 points and Mariah Knox had a team-high nine boards.
MACU limited the Coyotes to only 26.5 percent (18-of-68) shooting for the game while enjoying a huge 60-37 advantage on the glass.
The Lady Evangels will next compete in the OCU Classic on Nov. 18-19 on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
MACU will face a stern test against No. 3-ranked Our Lady of the Lake University on Nov. 18 at 6 pm, followed by a matchup with LSU-Shreveport on Nov. 19 at 1 pm. LSU-Shreveport narrowly missed out on the NAIA Top-25 preseason poll, finishing as the top vote getter.
