Lady Evangels Dominate Inside to Defeat Central Christian 79-60 and Improve to 10-1 for First Time as NAIA School

McPherson, Kan. -- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels pulled down 68 rebounds, their most since the 2014-15 season, in defeating the Central Christian College Tigers 79-60 tonight (Dec. 5) to improve to 10-1 for the first time since joining the NAIA in 2007.

Fueling the big performance on the boards was Brittany Thompson, who pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds, just three shy of the school's single-game mark as an NAIA school.

That record is held by D'Shala Powell, who contributed 11 boards along with 18 points for a double-double.

Getting in on the rebounding act was also guard Mikki Flores. Flores just missed a triple-double after producing a career-best 10 boards, 10 assists and scoring eight points.

The outcome was never in doubt tonight, as the Lady Evangels shook off an early 7-3 deficit by outscoring the Tigers 19-3 over the final 6:36 of the first quarter and the opening 46 seconds of the second period.

Powell had six points during the surge and Rodriguez and Fairley each scored five.

With the Tigers coming back within six at the 6:24 mark of the second quarter, the Lady Evangels finished the half strong with a decisive 14-1 spurt to lead 41-22 at the break.

The Lady Evangels were never threatened in the second half and built the lead as high as 29 points after two free throws by Janaya Hines made it 69-40 with 6:41 remaining in the game.

Rodriguez finished in double-figure scoring with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field 2-of-3 from the perimeter.

Abbie Banks had a double-double for the Tigers with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Piper Kalthoff had 15 points. Kelsey Grimaldo scored 11 along with a team-high six assists.

MACU limited the Tigers to only 29.2 percent (19-of-65) from the field and was +37 overall on the glass (68-31).

The Lady Evangels will remain at home and host No. 6-ranked (NAIA D-II) College of the Ozarks Thursday evening (Dec. 8) at 6 pm inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
