Baseball Evangels' Rally in Opener Falls Short as Hillcats Sweep Twinbill

Claremore, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels shaved a seven-run deficit down to one in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Rogers State University Hillcats, an NCAA D-II program, held on for an 8-6 win today (Feb. 6) at the Diamond Sports Complex in Claremore, Okla. The Hillcats then completed the sweep with a 12-2 win in the nightcap.

The Hillcats got on the board in the opener with two runs in the second before adding four more in the third.

Trailing 7-0 heading to the fifth inning, the Evangels fought their way back by scoring three runs in the fifth and sixth innings behind two RBI each from Ryan Moseley and Brandon Bordonaro.

RSU then added an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth and Rusty Huber held the Evangels scoreless in the seventh to pick up the save.

Moseley went 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, while Bordonaro also had a double.

Garrett Hall and Chris Miguel each went 3-of-3 and combined for five RBI to lead the Hillcats' offensive attack.

Much like the opening game, the Hillcats started fast in the nightcap with three runs in the first and another run in the second.

A two-run double by Jerry McNew in the fourth inning cut the deficit in half for the Evangels, but the Hillcats answered with two in the bottom of the inning and then put it away with two runs in the sixth and a four-run seventh inning.

McNew had two hits in three at-bats for the Evangels in the second game, while Caleb Kohlmeyer and Zach Ashford each drove in three runs to pace the Hillcats (5-0).

The Evangels' home opener will be Friday afternoon (Feb. 12) against Culver-Stockton College at 2 p.m. in the opener of a three-game series at James Curtis Field.
