OKLAHOMA CITY – Ryan Moseley was just a double away from hitting for the cycle as the Mid-America Christian University Evangels scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions 16-6 today (Mar. 18) in the opening tilt of a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series at James Curtis Field.
The win moves the Evangels to 13-10 overall and a program-best 5-2 start to the SAC season.
Following a four-run fifth inning for SAGU that snapped a 2-2 tie, Brandon Bordonaro singled to lead off the bottom of the inning and scored on a two-run homer by Moseley.
The Evangels weren't through in the fifth as three straight singles led to Jerry McNew driving home Chevin Noone with a single and then a sacrifice fly by Trey Henley plated Colt Pickens to tie the score at 6-6.
MACU then grabbed the lead as two SAGU errors led to three more runs being scored to finish off the seven-run frame.
The Evangels continued to pull away from there, tallying three runs on an RBI single by Reggie Lindsey and a two-run homer from Trey Henley in the sixth.
In the seventh inning, the Evangels got a solo homer from Bordonaro, an RBI triple by Moseley, a run-scoring double by Noone and an RBI single from Pickens to finish the game on the run-rule.
The Evangels' offensive attack featured three RBIs each from Moseley, Noone, Henley and Bordonaro. Pickens was three-of-five and Cale Backward was two-of-four with an RBI. McNew also had two hits for MACU.
Eric Hagstrom drove in three runs for the Lions (9-21), while Raul Castro had two RBIs.
Madison Spencer started for the Evangels and lasted six innings, giving up four earned runs with six strikeouts to get the win. Zach Carley came on and pitched a spotless seventh inning and struck out one.
The Evangels and Lions will complete the series tomorrow afternoon (Mar. 19) with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
