OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 15-ranked Oklahoma City University Stars won for the seventh time in their last eight games by taking a hard-fought 6-5 win in 11 innings over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the first of a three-game series tonight (Mar. 24) at Jim Wade Stadium.
The Stars won in walk-off fashion when Jared Baker hit a one-out, bases-loaded single through the right side in the bottom of the 11th to plate Hunter Marcum, who reached on a one-out single.
MACU had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th on a two-out RBI single by Colt Pickens that scored Cale Backward.
In the bottom of the 10th, closer Wyatt Glasgow allowed the tying run, but escaped further damage by inducing a fielder's choice and then getting a strikeout to end the inning to strand the bases loaded.
Down 3-1 in the seventh, Jerry McNew doubled home Pickens and Ryan Moseley to tie the score.
After the Stars regained the lead on an RBI single by Landon Coon in the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Moseley singled to lead off the MACU ninth and eventually scored the tying run on a wild pitch. That's all the Evangels could get though as OCU reliever Carlos Chavez got two strikeouts to get out of a bases loaded jam.
Moseley went four-of-five at the plate for the Evangels, while Pickens and McNew each drove in two runs.
Madison Spencer started for the Evangels and went 6 2/3 innings with three earned runs allowed. Zach Carley followed Spencer and blanked the Stars over 2 1/3 innings on only one hit and struck out two.
The Evangels will host the second game of the series tomorrow (Mar. 25) at 3 p.m. at James Curtis Field.
