Baseball Evangels Knock Off Rogers State 5-1 Behind Carley's Gem

OKLAHOMA CITY – Zach Carley threw six stellar innings to lead the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a 5-1 victory over the Rogers State University Hillcats today (Mar. 29) at James Curtis Field.

Carley was sharp throughout, not allowing a hit through the 3 1/3 frames and giving up only one unearned run in the sixth. He also struck out three and held the Hillcats to just the one hit in his six innings of work.

Chayse Pittman relieved Carley to start the seventh and got a double-play to get out of a jam and with the bases-loaded and two out in the eighth, Brandon Johnson came on and induced a sharp liner to second baseman Ryan Moseley to keep the Hillcats off the board in the eighth.

Johnson then left two stranded in the ninth with another lineout to second to end the game and pick up the save.

The Evangels (14-17) got on the board when Ryan Moseley led off the first with a walk, went to third on a hit from Colt Pickens and then scored on an RBI single by Jerry McNew.

After the Hillcats (16-12) tied the score on an error in the sixth, the Evangels answered with three in the bottom of the inning, capped by a two-run single by Aaron Conway that plated Trey Henley and Cale Backward.

Daxton Marley drove in the first run of the sixth on a groundout to score pinch-runner Brandon Schoelkopf.

McNew then gave the Evangels a valuable insurance run by leading off the eighth inning with his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Pickens and McNew each had two hits on the day for the Evangels.

The Evangels will next begin a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series with a doubleheader at Southwestern Christian University Friday afternoon (Apr. 1) starting at noon in Bethany, Okla. MACU will then host SCU in the series finale Saturday (Apr. 2), also at noon.
