Obeso Nabs NCCAA Pitcher of the Week Honor

Greenville, SC – Mid-America Christian University freshman pitcher Junior Obeso has added another award to his collection this week, as he has been named the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Pitcher of the Week, the organization released today (Apr. 12).

Yesterday, Obeso earned the Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

The honors come after Obeso became just the second pitcher in MACU history (as an NAIA school) to throw a no-hitter and the first since the 2009 season (Thomas Peabody).

Obeso tossed his no-no in a 13-0 rout of Central Christian College on Saturday (Apr. 9) to help the Evangels win the series.

"Everything was working great and Dylan (Queen) and I executed pitches well," Obeso said. "Our offense and defense was phenomenal."

Obeso was sharp throughout, never letting the ball out of the infield and striking out eight with no walks in his seven innings of work.

"We had a great game plan going in to pitch them aggressively inside because those guys like the ball around the plate, so we were going to try and jam them," MACU head coach Adrian Savedra said. "Junior hit his spots and our defense did the rest. Great individual performance and great team effort."

The Dover, Okla. native now leads the starting pitching staff in wins (five), earned-run-average (3.74) and strikeouts (51).

Obeso and the Evangels next play at Oklahoma Baptist University tonight at 6 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
