OKLAHOMA CITY – Alsis Herrera struck out 15 batters in eight shutout innings to lead the No. 23-ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers to an 8-0 win over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the first game of a three-game set today (Apr. 14) at James Curtis Field.
MACU's Madison Spencer was also solid and nearly matched Herrera through eight innings on the mound, allowing only three unearned runs.
But Spencer ran into trouble in the ninth as the first four Drovers reached against him and culminated with a two-run single by Raul Centeno that made it 5-0.
Chayse Pittman followed Spencer and struck out the first batter he faced, but a bases-loaded walk scored a run and a two-run single by Chris Musick capped a five-run inning that broke the game open.
A pair of errors led to the first two USAO runs, a two-run double by Dillon White in the third inning.
Ruddy Estrella pitched the ninth for the Drovers (33-10, 11-5 SAC) and picked up where Herrera left off with two strikeouts.
Ryan Moseley, Colt Pickens, Cale Backward and Dylan Queen each had a hit for the Evangels (16-24, 5-11 SAC).
The two schools will wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 15) starting at 4 p.m. in Chickasha, Okla.
