Wichita, Kan. – Jerry McNew homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a 12-0 romp of the Friends University Falcons tonight (Apr. 19) in Wichita, Kan. The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning due to heavy rainfall in the area.
McNew's two blasts give him a team-leading nine on the season, the most homers in a season for the Evangels since 2011.
McNew got it started early with a three-run homer in the first inning that scored Ryan Moseley and Colt Pickens to put the Evangels on top.
It stayed 3-0 until the Evangels got the bats going again in the fifth with three runs on an RBI single by Aaron Conway and a two-run single from Dylan Queen.
The Evangels then put it away with three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
The sixth inning featured an RBI single by Cale Backward and a two-run triple from Conway, while McNew capped the three-run seventh frame with a solo homer.
The Evangels (17-26) were well-balanced at the plate, as Pickens and Conway each had three hits and MACU also received two hits from Moseley, McNew, Backward and Riley Branum.
On the mound, Zach Carley put together a stellar outing, blanking the Falcons (21-25) through six innings on only two hits and three strikeouts to get the win.
Brandon Johnson then got two outs in the seventh and struck out one.
The Evangels will next begin a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series Thursday afternoon (Apr. 21) at Bacone College starting at 2 p.m. in Muskogee, Okla.
MACU will then host Bacone for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 23) at 1 p.m.
