OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian University Evangels got a career-high four RBIs from Riley Branum in the opener and then a solid, complete game effort by Blake Connor in the second game to sweep past the Bacone College Warriors today (Apr. 23) at James Curtis Field. The Evangels won the first game 13-6 and then the nightcap 8-3.
After the Warriors plated an unearned run in the first inning of the opening game, Branum doubled home Chevin Noone and Jerry McNew in the bottom of the first to put the Evangels on top.
The Warriors then committed three errors in the second inning that led to a five-run frame for MACU. The inning featured a two-run single by Aaron Conway, run-scoring singles from Branum and Brandon Schoelkopf along with a sacrifice fly by Noone.
Bacone clawed back with three runs in the third inning and the score was 7-4 until Ryan Moseley hit a two-run triple to score Reggie Lindsey and Schoelkopf before scoring himself on an error.
Following two more runs by the Warriors in the sixth, Branum again doubled home McNew and then scored on an RBI single by Cale Backward in the bottom of the inning.
Backward then scored the third run of the inning on an RBI single from Lindsey.
Madison Spencer started for the Evangels and battled through 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Spencer tied his career high with seven strikeouts and gave up six runs (five earned).
Brandon Johnson relieved Spencer and struck out two in 1 1/3 shutout innings.
Branum was three-of-four at the plate, while Conway and Lindsey each had two hits.
Adam Gray drove in two runs in the first game for the Warriors.
The nightcap saw Connor hold Bacone hitless through the first 4 2/3 innings before an infield hit spoiled the no-hit bid.
Connor pitched all seven innings and eventually allowed three runs, but only one earned tally with four strikeouts.
The Evangels (19-26, 7-13 SAC) grabbed an early lead in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Branum before exploding for six runs in the third.
Lindsey drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI triple and Moseley then chased home two with a single. McNew would then cap the frame with his team-leading 10th home run of the season, a three-run blast that made it 7-0.
Brandon Bordonaro finished the scoring for the Evangels with a solo homer in the fourth before the Warriors (5-33, 3-20 SAC) got on the board with two unearned runs in the sixth and then an RBI double by Colby Huval in the seventh inning.
Moseley had two hits in the nightcap for the Evangels with two RBIs.
The two schools will wrap up the three-game series with a single game tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 24) at 1 p.m. in Muskogee, Okla.
