Obeso's First Career No-Hitter Gives Evangels Series Win Over Central Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – Mid-America Christian University freshman pitcher Junior Obeso has made his mark by tossing his first career no-hitter today (Apr. 9) to lead the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a 13-0 romp of the Central Christian College Tigers in the rubber game of the three-game series at James Curtis Field.

"Everything was working great and Dylan (Queen) and I executed pitches well," Obeso said. "Our offense and defense was phenomenal."

Obeso was sharp throughout, never letting the ball out of the infield and striking out eight with no walks in his seven innings of work.

"I'm really proud of Junior and Dylan called a great game behind the plate," MACU head coach Adrian Savedra said.

Obeso was staked to a comfortable lead early on, as the Evangels plated five runs in the first and then broke it wide open with a six-run second inning.

Cale Backward was a catalyst of the Evangels' attack, driving in four runs on the day.  Backward drove in two runs in the first and then had an RBI single in both the second and third inning.

Riley Branum had three RBIs and Ryan Moseley drove home a pair of runs.

As is the case of many no-hit performances, great defense in the field is a must to keep it going.

Moseley made sure to give Obeso a chance to complete the gem by snagging a sharp liner to second and then throwing to first to double up the Tigers in the sixth inning.

"We had a great game plan going in to pitch them aggressively inside because those guys like the ball around the plate, so we were going to try and jam them," Savedra said. "Junior hit his spots and our defense did the rest. Great individual performance and great team effort."

The Evangels will next play at Oklahoma Baptist University Monday evening (Apr. 11) at 6 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.

MACU defeated OBU 9-5 at home in the first matchup back on Mar. 15
