Women's Hoops Fall to College of the Ozarks in Coke Classic

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The Mid-America Christian University women's basketball team took to the court at the NAIA Division II #6 College of the Ozarks Bobcats, one of the toughest tests on their 2017-18 schedule. The Lady Evangels battled fiercely, but when the evening was over, the Lady Evangels came out on the short end of the score.

Ozarks (8-0) opened the game on an 11-2 run, and they never looked back, as MACU (3-2) took a tough loss at Keeter Gymnasium, 83-73.

The Bobcats took the lead just 43 seconds into the game, and that lead grew to 11-2 in just 2:34 of play. MACU closed the gap to four on a free throw from Jennah Coffman just past the halfway point of the first quarter, and after the first 10 minutes of play, Ozarks led 23-17. Early in the second quarter, Alexis Shannon scored to pull the Lady Evangels to within two at 25-23, and while the Lady Evangels fought to stay close, the Bobcats held onto the lead, and at the half, MACU trailed 43-36. The Bobcats pushed their lead to double digits early in the third quarter, and MACU never got closer than nine for the remainder of the game, as Ozarks took the win 83-73.

Shannon continued her fast start to the 2017-18 campaign, scoring a game-high 24 points. Chelseah Savage (12) and Coffman (11) both also scored in double-figures. Ossyana Ozoani led the way with eight boards, and Mykayla Flores dished out seven assists in the loss.

As a team, MACU made 27-of-63 (42.9%) shots from the field, 9-of-23 (39.1%) 3-point attempts, and 10-of-12 (83.3%) free throws. The Lady Evangels also out-rebounded Ozarks 37-34.

MACU will wrap up their trip to the Coke Classic on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Grand View University Vikings (3-2) at 1 p.m.
